Crafty Sundry

She's crafty - she's gets around
She's crafty - she's always down
She's crafty - she's got a gripe
She's crafty - and she's just my type
She's crafty
—Beastie Boys
Oh, I just love it when Ad-Rock whines “she’s crafty”! He’s just so cute. OK, so this isn’t about that kind of crafty, but I thought it fit. After all, I have gripes.

Blame Dive for this posting of my crafty wares. Well, come to think of it, you can also blame Creative Carissa, as she convinced me to join Punk Rock Knitters, a knitting blog. And you can also blame Robyn for posting such pretty watercolors and getting Dive going on his Photoshop wonders. I’d say blame Knudsen too, but he’d probably kill me.

In my very first bloggy post I wrote about a number of things that I had caved on in my life (I had vowed never to get involved in blogging, hence the theme). Crafts was a big one. I come from a crafty family. Mom’s a former artist and current craftswoman extraordinaire (you name it, she’s tried it, and she’s amazing). Dad’s an amateur woodworker, and my sister is an artist. For a long time I figured that I’d be the unique one in my family and make absolutely nothing with my hands (I also had some what I thought to be feminist principles about not pursuing any kind of domestic arts). Thing is, it’s in the blood. It was only a matter of time before I’d turn to crafts. I’m glad I did. I like them.

Pottery
I took up pottery when I was living in New Hampshire. I never got terribly good at it, but I loved it very much. My Monday night class was with a bunch of salty women of varying ages and was taught by this perfectly normal guy, the most straight-laced potter I’ve ever met. We probably traumatized him, but he loved us. He screened people for our classes because he didn't want to mess up the vibe. I miss the class (almost like therapy) and haven’t found anything around these here parts to replace it.

Knitting
Knitting was something I swore I’d never do. Ever. But then I wanted this funky scarf that I could see in my mind, and I decided that I had to learn. Here’s a photo of the McDreamy hat and scarf set that I’m giving my mother for Christmas. She loves bubblegum pink, and I was in the middle of my endless Grey’s marathon, so I decided to name it after McDreamy (the hat pattern is from the Stitch ‘N Bitch book, and the scarf is free style). Read my first blog post for a picture of the cell phone cozies I made (they are cute). If you are really interested in the details, click here for my Punk Rock Knitters post (I finally did it, Carissa).

Mmm … salty women …

Love the pottery and the knitting, Sassy.
The colours and textures of your pots and stuff are gorgeous.
I've been hanging around Punk Rock Knitters, waiting to see your stuff, so I'm glad it's up there at last. Nice phone cozies.

I particularly liked Lana's Nine Inch Nails beanie, with the logo done in a pale pink called "blush heather" … I'm sure Trent would LOVE that!

I love the pottery--I thought about taking a class. We have a very cool art center that offers them now and then, but I just never got around to it.

And the McDreamy wear is lovely. I used to knit obsessively, but I have been doing other things lately and haven't found time for the yarn.

Glad you like my crafty wares.

Robyn, if you have the chance, you should take a class. I think the format of the class I took was unique, but I'd imagine that any class would be great.

Dive, I thought that beanie was fun. I'm not one for doing the grid thing, but one of these days I might do a tea cozy patterned with skulls.

Cool!

Stitch N Bitch has some pretty interesting ideas, and they aren't too much like grandma knitting, so they're cool. My friend who owns a yarn shop refuses to swear, so I try to at least get her to say the book title when I can. I'm surprised she even sells it.

I have a Sassy Original Coffee Mug that was made just for me! It is as beautiful as the wonderful whacky woman that made it for me!
Don't believe a word that she "never got good at it"... she is very CRAFTY!

Aw, shucks, Yetta. I'm glad you still like it.

I'd imagine that Stitch 'N Bitch caused many a nice yarn shop owning lady to squirm.

I have been doing slippers and scarves and the odd blanket, and prayer shawls for a friend's church (yes, I know, a Wiccan doing prayer shawls for a church? How odd. Everyone needs to keep warm, I say.)I can probably do hats, and I know how to do little purses as well (which is also odd, since I myself don't carry a purse). I'd love to figure out mittens or gloves.

Pottery...that sounds delightful.

I'm glad you took up blogging, we need more people like you, I took a pottery class for about 2 boring classes, I wanted to skip the boring spiral crap and make the good stuff but the class moved too slow and the teacher was crap, that's my excuse, your stuff is very good, you could sell that stuff, I've never done knitting as I am not an old granny or a punk but what about Dr McDreamy beating up his first wife,to see what beating up a woman was like ? you know the one that was 20 odd years older than him, I don't trust him, hes no Doug Ross.
Before gurl, a Wiccan with a good sense of humour, I am impressed.

Carissa, I'll probably need your help for the Skulky Tea Cozy, so you'll be the first to see it.

Before Girl, I knew you were talented, but prayer shawls! My goodness.

Knudsen, thank you for the compliment.Pottery is a blast, but you have to find the right class to learn. I'm still looking for a studio like the one I used to go to, and when I find it, I'm going back to pottery. On the McDreamy front, McDreamy didn't beat up his wife. He beat up McSteamy, but that was because he was chatting up Meredith last season.
